Isabel Chenoweth is an award-winning photographer in Connecticut specializing in portraits and fine art.
A native of Princeton, N.J., a graduate of Vassar College and the William and Mary Law School, Isabel practiced law in New Haven before returning twenty years ago to an early love of photography.
Isabel combines a deep understanding of traditional lighting and portraiture, classical composition, digital techniques, and documentary photography to achieve vibrant, natural portraits. She prefers natural settings where kids and families can interact with their surroundings, run, play and be themselves.
Isabel was the 2008 grand prize winner of the National juried exhibit "Close to Home" at Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven, Connecticut, which resulted in a two-person exhibit at the gallery in 2009. She has had solo exhibits at Atticus Books, New Haven (2017); the Lyman Center for the Performing Arts in New Haven (2011), the Capitol - Legislative Office Building in Hartford (2007), the Orange Library in Connecticut (2008), and the Loudoun County Library in Leesburg, Virginia (2006). Her images have received awards in juried exhibits at ArtSpace in Hartford, and Gallery on the Green in Canton, CT and have been included in numerous other juried exhibits including Images in Guilford, CT, and Gallery 14, Hopewell, NJ. Her images have also received awards from the University Photographers' Association of America.
Her recent documentary projects include "Women in Black," an exhibit in 2007 of seventy-six portraits of women judges in Connecticut at the State Capitol sponsored by the Connecticut Bar Foundation as part of its James W. Cooper Fellows oral history of women in the legal profession in Connecticut. Women in Black, 2nd Edition, includes forty-two portraits of women judges and was exhibited in the State Capitol in 2018.
She has over 100 images in "Little League, Big Dreams" by Charles Euchner, a documentary study of the Little League World Series and the changing dynamic of youth sports in America. She has also completed a series of images depicting over 60 neighborhood parks in Boston as part of a commissioned study on immigrants and the use of urban public spaces.
